About Urayomi
Urayomi reads the back-of-package labels of additive-free foods and household goods. Rather than choosing by the four characters 無添加 (“additive-free”) alone, we explain the ingredients one by one, so that you can choose knowing what is in a product and what each ingredient is there for.
How we make our articles
- We buy the product ourselves and photograph the mandatory label block on the package.
- We transcribe the 原材料名 (ingredient list) exactly as printed and write the date we checked it in the article.
- We check the role and origin of each ingredient against public documents such as those of the Consumer Affairs Agency and the Food Safety Commission, and against the manufacturer's official information or by asking the manufacturer.
- We write both the good points and the points of concern.
- When we notice that a package has changed, we update the article and rewrite the date checked.
- For best-selling staple products, instead of buying and photographing them, we sometimes transcribe the ingredients and other labeling from the manufacturer's official website. In that case, the page states the source of the transcription and the date checked.
What we do not write
- Statements that link not using additives to safety or health, such as “it is safe because it is additive-free” or “it is good for your body.”
- Statements that treat every additive the government permits as dangerous across the board.
- Statements that suggest an effect in preventing, treating or improving disease.

Until my twenties, I paid no attention to what I ate and ate out every day. In my early thirties, I was diagnosed with thyroid cancer and had surgery. Fortunately, the surgery removed the cancer.
That led me to rethink my daily meals around additive-free and natural foods, and I began checking the ingredients of household goods such as detergent too. Even so, although I have learned a lot, I do not restrict what I eat excessively.
The products I am strictest about are the seasonings I use at home every day. I keep finding products that catch my attention, comparing their labels, and swapping them in, and I still do. The articles on Urayomi are also a record of that.
