Urayomi in English
Reading Japanese food labels
ウラヨミ (Urayomi — “reading the back”) is a Japanese site that reads the ingredient list on the back of food and household products, one ingredient at a time. We list facts from Japanese law, public agencies and published research, and compare them with stricter overseas rules such as the EU's. We do not rate products or ingredients as good or bad.
We are translating the site into English step by step. Pages without an English version link to the Japanese page; your browser's translation feature can help there.
ToolIngredient CheckerPaste the 原材料名 (ingredient list) from a Japanese food package. The checker separates ingredients from food additives, gives English names, marks additives that the EU and other stricter regulators treat differently, and translates the allergen line. It matches 825 additive entries and 42 ingredient entries.
DatabaseIngredients A–Z42 words that appear in Japanese ingredient lists — from 酵母エキス (yeast extract) to 本醸造 soy sauce — explained one by one, with Japan's labeling rules and food composition data.
DatabaseFood additives42 additive names on Japanese labels — such as 調味料(アミノ酸等) and 乳化剤 — and 783 individual substances, each compared with the rules in the EU and other stricter regulators.
DatabaseSupplement ingredients107 supplement ingredients grouped by claimed function: notifications under Japan's Foods with Function Claims, whether the EU authorised the claim, and the US NIH's summary of the research.
DatabasePesticides183 pesticide active ingredients: registration and toxicity class in Japan, detections in national residue testing, and evaluations by WHO, the EU and IARC — with explainers on “pesticide-free” labels, washing and toxicity rankings.
DatabaseMicroplasticsStudy numbers for 23 foods, drinks and kitchen items, studies that found microplastics in the human body and their critics, types of plastic, and what WHO, EFSA and others say.
