In Japan

  • A bromine-based disinfectant (“殺菌料”). Under the standards for use, it may be used only for surface disinfection of meat. The upper limits for the concentration of the soaking solution or spray solution are set separately for meat and poultry meat.
  • When it qualifies as a processing aid that does not remain in the final food, labeling is exempt.

Japan's standards for use

  • Meat (excluding poultry meat): up to 0.90 g/kg as bromine in the soaking solution or spray solution
  • Poultry meat: up to 0.45 g/kg as bromine in the soaking solution or spray solution
  • Must not be used for any purpose other than surface disinfection of meat.

In the EU

  • It is not on the EU list of food additives (Regulation (EC) No 1333/2008, Annex II), so it cannot be used as a food additive in the EU.
