In the EU: the register of health claims

EU-authorised claim

  • The claim "olive oil polyphenols contribute to the protection of blood lipids from oxidative stress" is authorised. However, it can be used only for olive oil, on the condition that it contains at least 5 mg of hydroxytyrosol and related compounds per 20 g and that 20 g is eaten per day.
  • Claims such as "maintains HDL cholesterol" were not authorised.

In the EU, only health claims whose evidence has been assessed by the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) and authorised by the European Commission may be used on food. “Not authorised” means the evidence for that claim was not established under EU standards — not that the ingredient is dangerous.
