In the EU: the register of health claims

EU-authorised claimIn the register: 10 authorised, 9 not authorised

  • Claims such as reduction of tiredness, muscle and nerve function, and maintenance of bones and teeth are authorised.

In the EU, only health claims whose evidence has been assessed by the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) and authorised by the European Commission may be used on food. “Not authorised” means the evidence for that claim was not established under EU standards — not that the ingredient is dangerous.

What the US NIH says

  • A meta-analysis of clinical trials found a small drop in blood pressure, but the evidence for effects on heart disease, type 2 diabetes, and osteoporosis is limited.
  • Taking a lot from supplements or laxatives causes diarrhea. It interferes with the absorption of osteoporosis drugs (bisphosphonates) and some antibiotics.
