In the EU: the register of health claims

EU-authorised claim

  • The claim "Chewing gum sweetened 100% with xylitol reduces dental plaque (dental plaque is a risk factor in the development of caries in children)" is authorised (condition: 2-3 g after meals, at least 3 times a day).
  • The claim "helps maintain tooth mineralisation" for foods that use xylitol or similar ingredients in place of sugar is also authorised.

In the EU, only health claims whose evidence has been assessed by the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) and authorised by the European Commission may be used on food. “Not authorised” means the evidence for that claim was not established under EU standards — not that the ingredient is dangerous.
