Labeling rules
- The Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare (MHLW) specification for FOSHU (Foods for Specified Health Uses, “トクホ”) of the standardized-specification type defines galactooligosaccharide as a substance produced from lactose by the action of β-galactosidase, with 4′-galactosyllactose as its main component (2006 notice). It is one of the “関与成分” (ingredients responsible for the stated health function) of standardized-specification FOSHU.
- In the infant formula on this site, it is written before the slash (/) in the ingredient list, that is, on the food side.
- It is also used in notifications for Foods with Function Claims. In the EU, on the other hand, health claims about galactooligosaccharides and gut bacteria are not authorized (2011 assessment). Details are in “オリゴ糖類” (oligosaccharides) in the supplement database.
