Source and production
Obtained from the exudate of the mastic tree (family Anacardiaceae) by distilling off the low-boiling fraction, extracting with hot ethanol, and removing the ethanol. The main constituent is masticadienonic acid.

In Japan

  • A resin obtained from the exudate of the mastic tree (a tree of the family Anacardiaceae), used as the base of chewing gum (gum base).
  • Gum base falls within a group name, so when it is used for that purpose it can be labeled simply as “ガムベース” (gum base).
