In Japan

  • A coloring that is a type of carotenoid. Under the standards for use, it cannot be used in kelp, meat, fresh fish and shellfish, tea, nori seaweed, beans, vegetables, or wakame seaweed.
  • When used as a coloring, it must be written together with its purpose name. Simplified names include “アポカロテナール” (apocarotenal), “アポカロテナール色素” (apocarotenal pigment), “カロテノイド” (carotenoid), “カロテノイド色素” (carotenoid pigment), and “カロチノイド” (carotenoid, alternative spelling).

Japan's standards for use

  • Must not be used in kelp (kombu), meat, fresh fish and shellfish (including whale meat), tea, nori seaweed, beans, vegetables, or wakame seaweed.
  • Storage standard: store in a light-shielding, airtight container with the air replaced by an inert gas.

  • It is on the EU list of food additives (Regulation (EC) No 1333/2008, Annex II) as E160e.
  • In its 2014 evaluation, EFSA (the European Food Safety Authority) set an ADI (acceptable daily intake) of 0.3mg per kg of body weight per day (EFSA ANS).
