Source and production
Obtained from the fruit of the red pepper (Capsicum annuum), with capsanthins as the main component. It may contain edible fats and oils (definition in the specifications).

In Japan

  • A red to orange pigment obtained from the fruit of the red pepper (paprika) and used as a colorant. The main components are capsanthins, which are carotenoids.
  • A standard for use common to colorants other than chemically synthesized ones applies: it cannot be used in kelp (konbu), meat, fresh fish and shellfish (including whale meat), tea, nori seaweed, beans, vegetables, or wakame seaweed.
  • It is labeled under alternative names such as “パプリカ色素” (paprika color) and “カプシカム色素” (capsicum color), or under category names such as “カロテノイド色素” (carotenoid color). Because the name contains the character “色” (color), the purpose name “着色料” (colorant) can be omitted.

Japan's standards for use

  • Standard common to colorants (excluding chemically synthesized products): must not be used in kelp (konbu), meat, fresh fish and shellfish (including whale meat), tea, nori seaweed, beans, vegetables, or wakame seaweed

This is a summary of the standards for use. See the source list for the exact conditions.

In the EU

  • It is on the EU list of food additives (Regulation (EC) No 1333/2008, Annex II) as E160c.
  • In the EU it is registered as “paprika extract, capsanthin, capsorubin” (E160c).
  • In its 2015 evaluation, EFSA (the European Food Safety Authority) set an ADI (acceptable daily intake) of 24mg(パプリカ抽出物として。カロテノイドの合計では1.7mg) per kg of body weight per day (EFSA ANS).
