In Japan

  • One of the emulsifiers. Under the Food Labeling Standards, when used as an emulsifier it can be labeled under the group name “乳化剤” (emulsifier), and when used as the base of chewing gum, under “ガムベース” (gum base).
  • No standards for use (limits on which foods it can be used in and how much) have been set. When written by substance name, the short name “プロピレングリコールエステル” (propylene glycol ester) can be used.

In the EU

  • It is on the EU list of food additives (Regulation (EC) No 1333/2008, Annex II) as E477.
  • In its 2018 evaluation, EFSA (the European Food Safety Authority) set an ADI (acceptable daily intake) of 80mg per kg of body weight per day (EFSA FAF).

When it is labeled under a shared name

Propylene Glycol Esters of Fatty Acids may be declared on the label in the same way as “乳化剤”. See Emulsifier for details.
