Source and production
Obtained from the whole plant of Joshua tree (Yucca brevifolia) or Mojave yucca (Yucca schidigera); the main component is saponins (definition in Japan's Specifications and Standards for Food Additives).

In Japan

  • An emulsifier and processing agent whose main component is saponins, obtained from the whole plant of plants of the genus Yucca (Joshua tree and Yucca schidigera). There are no standards for use.
  • When used for emulsifying, it can be written simply with the group name “乳化剤” (emulsifier). When written by substance name, the alternate name “ユッカ抽出物” (yucca extract) and the simplified name “ユッカフォーム” (yucca foam) can also be used.

In the EU

  • It is not on the EU list of food additives (Regulation (EC) No 1333/2008, Annex II), so it cannot be used as a food additive in the EU.
