In Japan

  • Under the standards for use, it may in principle be used only for adding aroma, but as a manufacturing agent it may be used for denaturing the specified alcohols, producing yeast extract, and as a solvent for vinyl acetate resin.
  • When used as a flavoring, it can be written under the group name “香料” (flavoring) on food labels.

Japan's standards for use

  • Must not be used for any purpose other than flavoring. Exceptions:
  • Denaturing alcohol used for removing astringency from persimmons, producing crystalline fructose, producing granules or tablets of spices, or producing konjac flour; alcohol used as a solvent for BHT and BHA; or alcohol used as a raw material for brewing vinegar
  • Promoting autolysis of yeast in the production of yeast extract (must be removed before the final food is completed)
  • Use as a solvent for vinyl acetate resin

In the EU

  • In the EU, flavoring substances are covered by the flavorings regulation (Regulation (EC) No 1334/2008), not by the list of food additives. It is on the Union list of flavoring substances (Annex I) as FL 09.001.
