In Japan

  • A type of alcohol (2-propanol), designated as a flavoring and as a processing agent (“製造用剤”) used for extraction (an extraction solvent).
  • When used for extraction, the standards for use set upper limits on the amount that may remain, separately for hop extract, fish protein concentrate, and all other foods.
  • When used as a flavoring, it can be labeled with the group name “香料” (flavoring) on food labels.

Japan's standards for use

  • Flavoring: must not be used for any purpose other than flavoring.
  • Processing agent (“製造用剤”): must not be used for any purpose other than extraction.
  • Hops: maximum residue of 20 g/kg (per 1 kg of hop extract). Hop extract is limited to that added to wort in the production of beer and happoshu (low-malt beer-type beverages)
  • Fish meat: maximum residue of 0.25 g/kg (per 1 kg of fish protein concentrate; fish protein concentrate is fish meat with the water and fat removed)
  • All other foods: maximum residue of 0.2 g/kg (per 1 kg of the food after extraction and of foods made from it)

This is a summary of the standards for use. See the source list for the exact conditions.

In the EU

  • In the EU, flavoring substances are covered by the flavorings regulation (Regulation (EC) No 1334/2008), not by the list of food additives. It is on the Union list of flavoring substances (Annex I) as FL 02.079.
  • In its 2005 evaluation, EFSA (the European Food Safety Authority) set an ADI (acceptable daily intake) of 2.4mg per kg of body weight per day (EFSA AFC).

When it is labeled under a shared name

Isopropanol may be declared on the label in the same way as “香料”. See Flavoring for details.

This page lists facts stated in laws and in evaluations by public bodies; it is not a safety verdict. Additives used in Japan are approved by the government, which sets the foods and amounts they can be used in. The ADI is a guide to the amount that is considered safe to take every day over a lifetime.
