In Japan

  • A designated additive used as a flavoring substance. Its CAS number in the Japanese Standards for Food Additives is 3493-12-7, the same number as DL-methylmethionine sulfonium chloride in the EU list of flavouring substances. Under the standards for use, it cannot be used for any purpose other than flavoring.
  • When used as a flavoring, the food label can show just “香料” (flavoring) as the group name.

In the EU

  • In the EU, flavoring substances are covered by the flavorings regulation (Regulation (EC) No 1334/2008), not by the list of food additives. It is on the Union list of flavoring substances (Annex I) as FL 17.015.

When it is labeled under a shared name

(3-Amino-3-carboxypropyl)dimethylsulfonium Chloride may be declared on the label in the same way as “香料”. See Flavoring for details.
