Acetone アセトン
Designated additiveNot on the EU additive list
- Purpose
- processing agent
- On the label
- “アセトン” (acetone) (removed before the final food is completed, so it is not listed when it counts as a processing aid)
- Name in the List of Designated Additives
- アセトン (No. 23)
In Japan
- A solvent used for extraction and similar purposes (a manufacturing agent). Under the standards for use, it is limited to extracting components from guarana beans in making guarana drinks and to fractionating components of fats and oils, and it must be removed before the final food is completed.
- Substances removed before the food is completed are treated as “processing aids” and are exempt from additive labeling.
Japan's standards for use
- Guarana beans, fats and oils: only for extracting components from guarana beans in making guarana drinks and for fractionating components of fats and oils
- Must be removed before the final food is completed
This is a summary of the standards for use. See the source list for the exact conditions.
In the EU
- It is not on the EU list of food additives (Regulation (EC) No 1333/2008, Annex II), so it cannot be used as a food additive in the EU.
- It is not on the EU list of food additives (Regulation (EC) No 1333/2008, Annex II). It is listed in Directive 2009/32/EC on extraction solvents, Annex I, Part I, as an extraction solvent that can be used for all uses in accordance with good manufacturing practice (its use in refining olive-pomace oil is prohibited).

This page lists facts stated in laws and in evaluations by public bodies; it is not a safety verdict. Additives used in Japan are approved by the government, which sets the foods and amounts they can be used in. The ADI is a guide to the amount that is considered safe to take every day over a lifetime.
