In Japan
- The specifications and standards have two grades, “calcium carbonate I” and “calcium carbonate II”. The standards for use apply to calcium carbonate II, which is made by a method that can leave a double salt of calcium L-tartrate and L-malate, and it is limited to wine and the grape juice used to make it (set in 2020 (Reiwa 2)).
- It falls within the group name ranges for leavening agents (“膨脹剤”), yeast food (“イーストフード”), and gum base (“ガムベース”). The simplified name when written by substance name is “炭酸Ca” (Ca carbonate).
- It is also included among additives that may be used for nutrient fortification (minerals), and labeling can be omitted when it is used for that purpose (except in foods for special dietary uses and foods with function claims).
Japan's standards for use
- Calcium carbonate II: only for grape juice used to make wine, and for wine.
This is a summary of the standards for use. See the source list for the exact conditions.
In the EU
- It is on the EU list of food additives (Regulation (EC) No 1333/2008, Annex II) as E170.

This page lists facts stated in laws and in evaluations by public bodies; it is not a safety verdict. Additives used in Japan are approved by the government, which sets the foods and amounts they can be used in. The ADI is a guide to the amount that is considered safe to take every day over a lifetime.
