In Japan

  • An oxide of magnesium, used for purposes such as adding magnesium to foods (nutritional fortification). There are no standards for use (rules on which foods it may be used in or how much).
  • Its short name is “酸化Mg” (magnesium oxide). When used for nutritional fortification, labeling may, in principle, be omitted (CAA, Annex to the Food Labeling Standards explanatory notice).

  • It is on the EU list of food additives (Regulation (EC) No 1333/2008, Annex II) as E530.
  • In the EU, the foods in which it may be used are limited to some, such as cocoa and chocolate products (up to 70 g/kg) and salt.
