Menaquinone(Extract) Vitamin K2(Extract) メナキノン(抽出物)
Existing food additiveNot on the EU additive list
- Purpose
- nutrient (fortification)
- On the label
- “メナキノン” (menaquinone), “ビタミンK2” (vitamin K2), “V.K2” (V.K2), “ビタミンK” (vitamin K), “V.K” (V.K)
- Name in the List of Existing Food Additives
- メナキノン(抽出物) (No. 292)
- Source and production
- Obtained from a culture of a bacterium of the genus Arthrobacter (Arthrobacter nicotianae), with menaquinone-4 as the main component (specifications).
In Japan
- Its purpose in the List of Existing Food Additives is nutrient fortifier. The alternative name is “ビタミンK2(抽出物)” (vitamin K2 (extract)), and the short names are ビタミンK2, ビタミンK, V.K2, V.K, and メナキノン (menaquinone).
- When used to fortify nutrition, labeling is in principle exempt.
- There are no standards for use.
Japan's standards for use
There are no standards for use that limit which foods or how much (the general standards for all additives still apply).
This is a summary of the standards for use. See the source list for the exact conditions.
In the EU
- It is not on the EU list of food additives (Regulation (EC) No 1333/2008, Annex II), so it cannot be used as a food additive in the EU.
- In the EU, the addition of vitamins to food is covered by Regulation (EC) 1925/2006, which lists “menaquinone” (mainly menaquinone-7) as a form of vitamin K. The Japanese menaquinone (extract) has menaquinone-4 as its main component.

This page lists facts stated in laws and in evaluations by public bodies; it is not a safety verdict. Additives used in Japan are approved by the government, which sets the foods and amounts they can be used in. The ADI is a guide to the amount that is considered safe to take every day over a lifetime.
