Source and production
Obtained by separation from the culture solution of actinomycetes (genus Streptomyces) or bacteria (genera Agrobacterium, Bacillus, Propionibacterium, etc.). The component is cyanocobalamin.

In Japan

  • One form of vitamin B12, obtained by separation from the culture solution of microorganisms and used as a fortifier. There are no standards for use.
  • Another name is “ビタミンB12” (vitamin B12), and the simplified name is “V.B12”. When used for nutrient fortification, labeling is exempt (Food Labeling Standards).

In the EU

  • It is not on the EU list of food additives (Regulation (EC) No 1333/2008, Annex II), so it cannot be used as a food additive in the EU.
