In Japan

  • Zinc salts designated as fortifiers that supply zinc; the scope is limited to two, zinc gluconate and zinc sulfate. The standards for use set the foods and amounts in which they may be used (zinc gluconate in breast milk substitute foods, foods for specified health uses, foods with nutrient function claims, and so on; zinc sulfate in sparkling alcoholic beverages and breast milk substitute foods).
  • They are on the list of additives that may be intended for nutritional fortification (minerals), and when used for nutritional fortification, labeling of the additive can generally be omitted.

Japan's standards for use

  • Zinc gluconate: breast milk substitute foods, up to 6.0 mg/L as zinc when prepared to the standard milk concentration (except when used with approval of the Prime Minister)
  • Zinc gluconate: foods for specified health uses and foods with nutrient function claims, up to 15 mg as zinc per day's intake guideline amount of the food
  • Zinc gluconate: foods with permission or approval for special dietary use labeling
  • Zinc sulfate (processing agent): sparkling alcoholic beverages, up to 0.0010 g/kg as zinc
  • Zinc sulfate (fortifier): breast milk substitute foods, not to exceed 6.0 mg/L as zinc when prepared to the standard milk concentration (except when used with approval of the Prime Minister)

This is a summary of the standards for use. See the source list for the exact conditions.

In the EU

  • It is not on the EU list of food additives (Regulation (EC) No 1333/2008, Annex II), so it cannot be used as a food additive in the EU.
