L-Lysine L-リシン
Existing food additiveNot on the EU additive list
- Purpose
- seasoning, nutrient (fortification)
- On the label
- “調味料(アミノ酸)” (seasoning (amino acid)), “L-リシン” (L-lysine), “L-リジン” (L-lysine), “リシン” (lysine), “リジン” (lysine) (labeling is exempt when used for nutritional fortification)
- Name in the List of Existing Food Additives
- L-リシン (No. 313)
- Source and production
- The amino acid L-lysine ((2S)-2,6-diaminohexanoic acid). The specifications require 97.0 to 103.0% L-lysine (anhydrous basis). The aqueous solution “L-リシン液” (L-lysine solution) is included in the same item.
In Japan
- The amino acid L-lysine; its purposes in the List of Existing Food Additives are seasoning and fortifier. The liquid “L-リシン液” (L-lysine solution) is also included. There are no standards for use.
- When used as a seasoning, it can be written with the group name “調味料(アミノ酸)” (seasoning (amino acid)). When written by substance name, the alternative name “L-リジン” (L-lysine) and the short names “リシン” (lysine) and “リジン” (lysine) can also be used. When used for nutritional fortification, labeling is exempt (except for foods for special dietary uses and foods with function claims).
- The designated additives “L-リシン塩酸塩” (L-lysine hydrochloride), “L-リシンL-アスパラギン酸塩” (L-lysine L-aspartate), and “L-リシンL-グルタミン酸塩” (L-lysine L-glutamate) are separate items.
Japan's standards for use
There are no standards for use that limit which foods or how much (the general standards for all additives still apply).
This is a summary of the standards for use. See the source list for the exact conditions.
In the EU
- It is not on the EU list of food additives (Regulation (EC) No 1333/2008, Annex II), so it cannot be used as a food additive in the EU.
When it is labeled under a shared name
L-Lysine may be declared on the label in the same way as “調味料(アミノ酸等)”. See Seasoning (amino acids etc.) — e.g. MSG for details.

This page lists facts stated in laws and in evaluations by public bodies; it is not a safety verdict. Additives used in Japan are approved by the government, which sets the foods and amounts they can be used in. The ADI is a guide to the amount that is considered safe to take every day over a lifetime.
