Crude Potassium Chloride(Sea Water) 粗製海水塩化カリウム
Existing food additiveNot on the EU additive list
- Purpose
- seasoning
- On the label
- “調味料(無機塩)” (seasoning (inorganic salt)), “調味料(アミノ酸等)” (seasoning (amino acids, etc.)), and others; “粗製海水塩化カリウム” (crude potassium chloride from seawater)
- Name in the List of Existing Food Additives
- 粗製海水塩化カリウム (No. 168)
- Source and production
- Obtained by separating sodium chloride from seawater by crystallization, with potassium chloride as the main component. Contains 60.0 to 85.0% potassium chloride on a dry basis (specifications and standards).
In Japan
- Obtained after table salt (sodium chloride) is taken from seawater, with potassium chloride as the main component. Its purpose in the List of Existing Food Additives is seasoning.
- It falls within the group name for seasonings (inorganic salts), so when used for seasoning it can be written together as “調味料(無機塩)” (seasoning (inorganic salt)) and similar.
- It is treated as a separate item from “塩化カリウム” (potassium chloride), a designated additive. There are no standards for use.
Japan's standards for use
There are no standards for use that limit which foods or how much (the general standards for all additives still apply).
This is a summary of the standards for use. See the source list for the exact conditions.
In the EU
- It is not on the EU list of food additives (Regulation (EC) No 1333/2008, Annex II), so it cannot be used as a food additive in the EU.
- The EU additive list includes potassium chloride (E508), but does not list crude potassium chloride obtained from seawater.

This page lists facts stated in laws and in evaluations by public bodies; it is not a safety verdict. Additives used in Japan are approved by the government, which sets the foods and amounts they can be used in. The ADI is a guide to the amount that is considered safe to take every day over a lifetime.
