Purpose
antioxidant, nutrient (fortification)
On the label
“酸化防止剤(ビタミンE)” (antioxidant (vitamin E)), “酸化防止剤(V.E)” (antioxidant (vitamin E)), “酸化防止剤(γ-トコフェロール)” (antioxidant (γ-tocopherol)), “酸化防止剤(抽出トコフェロール)” (antioxidant (extracted tocopherol))
Name in the List of Existing Food Additives
d-γ-トコフェロール (No. 198)
Source and production
Obtained by separation from vegetable fats and oils obtained from oilseeds, or from mixed tocopherols, with d-γ-tocopherol as the main component. May contain edible fats and oils (specifications and standards).

In Japan

  • A type of vitamin E, obtained by separation from vegetable fats and oils and similar sources. Its purposes in the List of Existing Food Additives are antioxidant and nutrient fortifier; another name is “γ-ビタミンE” (γ-vitamin E).
  • When used as an antioxidant, the purpose name must be shown alongside, written like “酸化防止剤(ビタミンE)” (antioxidant (vitamin E)). The short names “ビタミンE” (vitamin E), “抽出V.E” (extracted vitamin E), and “抽出トコフェロール” (extracted tocopherol) are shared with d-α- and d-δ-tocopherol and mixed tocopherols.
  • Labeling is exempt when it is used for nutrient fortification.

Japan's standards for use

There are no standards for use that limit which foods or how much (the general standards for all additives still apply).

This is a summary of the standards for use. See the source list for the exact conditions.

In the EU

  • It is on the EU list of food additives (Regulation (EC) No 1333/2008, Annex II) as E308.
  • The EU’s E308 is a specification for synthetic γ-tocopherol, while extracts rich in naturally derived tocopherols are separately defined as E306.

When it is labeled under a shared name

d-γ-Tocopherol may be declared on the label in the same way as “酸化防止剤(ビタミンC・ビタミンE)”. See Antioxidant (vitamin C / vitamin E) for details.

This page lists facts stated in laws and in evaluations by public bodies; it is not a safety verdict. Additives used in Japan are approved by the government, which sets the foods and amounts they can be used in. The ADI is a guide to the amount that is considered safe to take every day over a lifetime.
