- Source and production
- Obtained by extracting the seeds of sunflower (family Asteraceae), or the press cake left after oil extraction from the seeds, with hot water or aqueous ethanol. The active components are isochlorogenic acid and chlorogenic acid.
In Japan
- Obtained by extraction from sunflower seeds or press cake, with isochlorogenic acid and chlorogenic acid as the active components. On the List of Existing Food Additives, its purpose is antioxidant. There are no standards for use.
- When used as an antioxidant, the purpose name must be written alongside, as in “酸化防止剤(ヒマワリ種子)” (antioxidant (sunflower seed)). Other names are “ヒマワリエキス” (sunflower extract), “ヒマワリ種子エキス” (sunflower seed extract), and “ヒマワリ抽出物” (sunflower extract), and the short name is “ヒマワリ種子” (sunflower seed).
