- Source and production
- Extracted from the leaves of salvia (sage) with water, ethanol, or hexane. The active components are phenolic diterpenoids (diterpenes) and carnosic acid.
In Japan
- Extracted from the leaves of salvia (sage), with carnosic acid and similar compounds as the active components. On the List of Existing Food Additives, its purpose is antioxidant.
- Because it is used for antioxidant purposes, it is written together with the purpose name, as in “酸化防止剤(セージ抽出物)” (antioxidant (sage extract)). There are no standards for use.
- It is excluded from the scope of the existing food additive “香辛料抽出物” (spice extract) and is treated as a separate item.
