In Japan

  • An antioxidant that prevents oxidation. In Japan it can be used only in fats and oils and butter (standards for use).
  • Because it is an antioxidant, it is written together with the purpose name, as in “酸化防止剤(没食子酸プロピル)” (antioxidant (propyl gallate)). The short name is “没食子酸” (gallic acid) (CAA, Attachment to the Food Labeling Standards guidance).

  • It is on the EU list of food additives (Regulation (EC) No 1333/2008, Annex II) as E310.
