- Source and production
- Obtained from the buds, leaves, or flowers of the clove tree (Syzygium aromaticum, Myrtaceae family) by extraction with ethanol or acetone, or by steam distillation. The main component is eugenol and similar compounds.
In Japan
- An antioxidant obtained from the buds, leaves, and flowers of the clove tree, with eugenol and similar compounds as the main components. There are no standards for use.
- Because it is an antioxidant, the purpose name must be shown alongside, written like “酸化防止剤(クローブ抽出物)” (antioxidant (clove extract)). Another name is “チョウジ抽出物” (clove extract), and the short name is “チョウジ油” (clove oil).
- “クローブ抽出物” (clove extract) is excluded from the scope of spice extracts and is treated as a separate item (definition in the List).
