In Japan
- One of the vitamins, used to add nutrients. The foods it can be used in are limited by the standards for use.
- It is on the list of “additives that may be intended for nutritional fortification” (vitamins). When used for nutritional fortification, labeling can be omitted (except for foods for special dietary uses and foods with function claims).
Japan's standards for use
- Only for infant formula, follow-on liquid formula, breast milk substitute foods, foods for specified health uses (FOSHU) and foods with nutrient function claims
- Breast milk substitute foods: up to 10 µg per 100 kcal

In the EU
- It is not on the EU list of food additives (Regulation (EC) No 1333/2008, Annex II), so it cannot be used as a food additive in the EU.
- In the EU regulation on adding vitamins and minerals to food (1925/2006), D-biotin is listed as a form that can be used when adding biotin.
