Labeling rules
- The Food Labeling Standards (Appended Table 1) place “コーヒー製品” (coffee products) within the processed food category “茶、コーヒー及びココアの調製品” (tea, coffee and cocoa preparations).
- The Consumer Affairs Agency's Q&A on the Food Labeling Standards (item 加工-152) says the country of origin of instant coffee is the country where the coffee beans were ground and where the drying after extraction and concentration took place. It also explains that, under the industry's fair competition code, regular coffee and instant coffee are labeled with the country where the green beans were produced.
- Coffee is not on the list of allergen items (the “特定原材料” (allergens that must be labeled) and the “特定原材料に準ずるもの” (allergens recommended for labeling)).
Good to know
- When the ingredient list says only “粉末コーヒー” (powdered coffee), the label does not tell you whether it is ground roasted beans or instant coffee made by drying an extract, or where the beans came from.
- Among the products on this site, “こくまろカレー” (Kokumaro Curry, by House Foods) lists “粉末コーヒー” (powdered coffee) near the end of its ingredients.
- In the Standard Tables of Food Composition in Japan (8th revised edition, 2023 supplement), instant coffee has 287 kcal and 3,600 mg of potassium per 100 g. Brewed coffee (infusion) has 4 kcal.
