Copied from the package as of the date checked. The label is shown in Japanese as printed; tap an ingredient to see its English name and role. The links in the table below lead to our Ingredients A–Z and food additive database. There is no best-before date or storage method on the label. Under the Food Labeling Standards, table salt is a food for which the best-before date and storage method may be omitted. The package says it is certified by Nature et Progrès (a French organic farming organization), the French-language side says IGP Guérande (an EU geographical indication), and it carries the Fair Mark of the Edible Salt Fair Trade Council. It also warns that a small amount of impurities from the salt marsh may be mixed in, and that the salt may clump in humid conditions. The manufacturer on the French-language side is Le Paludier de Guérande (SAS BOURDIC).
Ingredients, one by one
| On the label | Type | Role | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| 海水(フランス)seawater | Ingredient | Base of the salt (the only ingredient) | Under the industry's fair competition code, salt labels have a set field for the “製造方法” (production method). For this product it reads “原材料名:海水(フランス)” (ingredients: seawater, France) and “工程:天日、乾燥、粉砕” (process: sun, drying, crushing). “天日” (sun) is a step in which water evaporates in the salt marsh by the power of the sun and wind and the salt crystallizes. “乾燥” (drying) is a step that removes moisture from the salt with equipment (it does not include sun-drying). “粉砕” (crushing) is a step that breaks the salt into smaller grains. According to the importer, these granules are coarse salt (“あら塩”) harvested by hand in the salt marshes and made fine by the producer's own method. |

Not found in the ingredient list
This is not the maker's “not used” claim. These are things often seen in similar products that we checked are not written in this product's ingredient list. Additives carried over from ingredients may not be declared, so this does not mean they are absent (about additives not written on labels).

海水(フランス)
海水(日本)
This is the label on the Salt Industry Center's official page (checked 2026-09-30). Neither contains additives. The difference is how they are made. The process for Shokuen is “イオン膜、立釜、乾燥” (ion membrane, sealed pan, drying): salt from Japanese seawater is concentrated into strong brine with an ion membrane, then boiled down in a sealed pan (立釜) to crystallize. The quality standard is 99% or more sodium chloride. Guérande salt is crystallized in salt marshes by the sun and wind, and the salt equivalent on its label is 93.9 g per 100 g (estimated).
Good points and concerns
+Good points
- The only ingredient is seawater from France, with 0 additives
- The process is “天日、乾燥、粉砕” (sun, drying, crushing). The salt is crystallized in the salt marsh, dried and crushed, and is not boiled down again in a sealed pan (立釜)
- Because it is granulated, it is finer than coarse salt and can be used at the table as it is (according to the importer)
−Concerns
- ¥950 for 500 g (¥190 per 100 g)
- Out of stock at the official online shop (restocking expected in early October, checked 2026-09-30). Shipping is ¥800 for orders under ¥5,000 before tax
- Because there is no anti-caking additive, it can clump in humid conditions (also noted on the package)
- A small amount of impurities from the salt marsh may be mixed in (noted on the package)
