Hydroxypropyl Starch ヒドロキシプロピルデンプン
Designated additivePermitted in the EU (E1440)
- Purpose
- thickener / stabilizer
- On the label
- “加工デンプン” (modified starch), “増粘剤(加工デンプン)” (thickener (modified starch))
- Name in the List of Designated Additives
- ヒドロキシプロピルデンプン (No. 327)
In Japan
- One of the “modified starches” (加工デンプン), which are starches processed chemically. It has no standards for use (rules on which foods it can be used in and how much).
- It can be labeled with the short name “加工デンプン” (modified starch). When used as a thickener, stabilizer, gelling agent or thickening agent (norizai), it is written together with the purpose name, as in “増粘剤(加工デンプン)” (thickener (modified starch)) (CAA, Attachment to the Food Labeling Standards guidance).
Japan's standards for use
There are no standards for use that limit which foods or how much (the general standards for all additives still apply).
This is a summary of the standards for use. See the source list for the exact conditions.
In the EU
- It is on the EU list of food additives (Regulation (EC) No 1333/2008, Annex II) as E1440.
- In the EU, modified starches can be written together as “modified starch”, rather than by E number or individual name (EU Regulation 1169/2011).
When it is labeled under a shared name
Hydroxypropyl Starch may be declared on the label in the same way as “加工デンプン”. See Modified starch for details.

This page lists facts stated in laws and in evaluations by public bodies; it is not a safety verdict. Additives used in Japan are approved by the government, which sets the foods and amounts they can be used in. The ADI is a guide to the amount that is considered safe to take every day over a lifetime.
