Sodium Carboxymethylcellulose (Sodium Cellulose Glycolate) カルボキシメチルセルロースナトリウム(別名繊維素グリコール酸ナトリウム)
Designated additivePermitted in the EU (E466)
- Purpose
- thickener / stabilizer
- On the label
- “増粘剤(CMC)” (thickener (CMC)), “安定剤(CMC-Na)” (stabilizer (CMC-Na)), “糊料(CMC)” (thickening agent (CMC)), “増粘剤(繊維素グリコール酸Na)” (thickener (sodium cellulose glycolate))
- Name in the List of Designated Additives
- カルボキシメチルセルロースナトリウム(別名繊維素グリコール酸ナトリウム) (No. 104)
In Japan
- A “糊料” (thickening agent) used to add thickness or stability. Under the standards for use, the amount is limited to 2.0% or less of the food.
- When it is used as a thickener, stabilizer, or gelling agent (“糊料”), it is written together with its purpose name, as in “増粘剤(CMC)” (thickener (CMC)). The short names “CMC-Na,” “繊維素グリコール酸Na” (sodium cellulose glycolate), and “CMC” can also be used.
Japan's standards for use
- Up to 2.0% of the food (when used together with calcium carboxymethylcellulose and sodium starch glycolate, the sum of the amounts used must be up to 2.0%)
This is a summary of the standards for use. See the source list for the exact conditions.
In the EU
- It is on the EU list of food additives (Regulation (EC) No 1333/2008, Annex II) as E466.
When it is labeled under a shared name
Sodium Carboxymethylcellulose (Sodium Cellulose Glycolate) may be declared on the label in the same way as “増粘剤・安定剤・ゲル化剤”. See Thickener / stabilizer / gelling agent for details.

This page lists facts stated in laws and in evaluations by public bodies; it is not a safety verdict. Additives used in Japan are approved by the government, which sets the foods and amounts they can be used in. The ADI is a guide to the amount that is considered safe to take every day over a lifetime.
