This is a general name for oils taken from the seeds and fruits of plants, together with fats such as pork and beef fat. In curry roux, it is the base in which the wheat flour is fried.

Labeling rules
- Edible oils and fats can be written in the ingredient list under group names: “植物油” (vegetable oil), “植物脂” (vegetable fat), “植物油脂” (vegetable oils and fats), “動物油” (animal oil), “動物脂” (animal fat), “動物油脂” (animal oils and fats), “加工油” (processed oil), “加工脂” (processed fat), and “加工油脂” (processed oils and fats) (table in Article 3 of the Food Labeling Standards). With this style, you cannot tell from the label which oil it is.
- When the label says only “食用油脂” (edible oils and fats), you cannot even tell whether it is plant or animal. In an example of a fat blend of lard, beef tallow, palm oil, and soybean oil, the Consumer Affairs Agency Q&A shows that when the contents are not written, it is written as “食用油脂”, with the allergens (pork, beef, soybean) written together at the end.
- Some products write the contents in parentheses (example: “植物油脂（有機べに花油、パーム油）”, vegetable oils and fats (organic safflower oil, palm oil)).
Good to know
- The proportions of fatty acids (saturated fat, omega-6, omega-3, and so on) differ greatly depending on the kind of oil. The articles below compare them in detail.
- Among the products on this site, these are in six curry roux products and infant formula. In Cosmo Foods' rice flour curry, the oil is the largest ingredient, so the place of origin (“国内製造”, made in Japan) is attached to the oil.
